Second go around today in the Polestar 2. Volvos are just better as EVs… what was the last interesting ICE they’ve put out? Design wise- total champion over model 3 inside & out- all the materials feel built to last with simplicity in a charming Volvo way. Shockingly good handling while not being stiff and overtly sporty like the Tesla. Biggest gripe was the epas… something wrong with the calibration where under certain conditions it will almost fight you or stick for a millisecond in the current direction which creates a choppy feel that could be a dealbreaker for me on this otherwise excellent car. The one pedal driving in standard mode had positive linear tuning that was easy to modulate. Both the Miata and Cayman got prepped for the season with their winter tires this week. We took them out for a romp today and had an absolute blast! Miata on 205/45/17 Sottozeros and the Cayman on 235F 275R/35/20 Vredestein Wintracs. Huge fun in both with the cold, wet, slippy conditions. The cayman turns into a total animal, looking to push the nose in and slide the ass out with every prod of the throttle. The Miata feels more similar to on the summers with just a bit more overall slack in the steering and earlier understeer. Quite timely following this week’s podcast, today’s #rentalcarreview is another Tesla from @hertz - This Model 3 came to me with a December 2022 production date and less than 2000 miles- a better chance for Elon’s bargain (sub $40k at time of writing) Model 3 to shine. While driving I listened to the newest #spikescarradio and @jerryseinfeld commented on how much he liked the design of the Model 3, somehow comparing it to the elegant simplicity of w123 era Mercedes. After this interaction, I agree- the design inside and out is an absolute un-fussed success! Unfortunately the unsettled ride, twitchy steering, and variable brake feel mean the Model 3 is surely not a choice for those who love driving. Autoholic rating- 👎🏼….That said, as a cheap rental (I booked “Manager’s Special”), nothing to complain about here!
